Longboards are extremely buoyant and have a large planing surface, so riders can surf waves deemed to small to propel other boards. The board is popular among beginners and experienced riders, because of the frequency of catching waves. In the proper conditions, a skilled surfer can surf on the nose of the longboard, with their toes hanging over the edge, called "hanging ten". Longboards are the original and first variety of board used for standup surfing. Ancient Hawaiians started the practice with boards reaching from 10 to 14 feet in length, and weighing as much as 150 pounds.
